The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a multiparty democracy. The constitution, which came
into effect in 2006 and was amended in 2011, allows a limited degree of federalism, but the country is
predominantly a centralised state. The president is the head of state and commander-in-chief of the
armed forces. From 1965 to 1996 the country was a dictatorship, ruled by Mobutu Sese Seko, who was
overthrown by Laurent-Désiré Kabila. Mr Kabila was assassinated in 2001, and succeeded by his son,
Joseph Kabila. Joseph Kabila initially ruled a transitional government, and, in 2006, won the country’s
first democratic presidential election in over 40 years, in the face of a strong challenge from Jean-
Pierre Bemba...
