Managing natural resources. Tanzania
Tanzania as a country was created from the union of the newly independent mainland state of Tanganyika and the islands of Zanzibar in 1964. This continues to have political importance because, while the broad outline of the union has always been quite well defined, the exact terms of the union are still not always clear and, in fact, perhaps best described as slowly evolving. This union could well become even more important in the coming years, with the prospect of significant oil and gas finds off the coast of the country, from which many Zanzibaris feel they should derive more benefits, given that the potential reserves are located in what they would argue are their territorial waters. Zanzibar has its own constitution, president and parliament, although Zanzibari MPs also sit in the national parliament, known as the Bunge....
