Tunisia has experienced significant upheaval in recent years, including a revolution and the fall of
the despotic ruling regime in January 2011. However, deposing Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and moving
towards democracy has not solved Tunisia’s myriad social, political, religious and economic troubles.
Elections in October 2011 marked an important stage in Tunisia’s hoped-for transition to democracy
and generated a surge of optimism about the country’s future. They brought to power a coalition of
three parties: Hizb al-Nahda, a moderate Islamist party: the left-wing Congrès pour la république
(CPR); and another left-of-centre party, Ettakatol. The coalition has a temporary mandate to run the
country until a new constitution can be written and a new government elected. However, much of
