Zambia is a republic with a multiparty democracy system, under which executive power is vested in a
president, who is elected by universal suffrage every five years. The country is a relatively vibrant and
well-functioning democracy, as highlighted by the smooth transfer of power from the Movement for
Multiparty Democracy (MMD) to the Patriotic Front (PF) following the national elections in September
2011. Elections have generally been free and fair, and, while there have been some instances of
election-related violence owing to disputes over results, these have been on a very small scale. Ethnic
violence is very rare and, although tribal identities do have some influence on political affiliations,
they are not the main causes of division. Periodic calls for the secession of the Western province lead to
occasional unrest there, but present little risk to political stability...
